Meet the Maker

Joe (He/They) is a self taught potter and maker. They started learning ceramics in 2020 while working out of a home studio. They were introduced to handbuilding years ago but have since found a passion for working on the wheel. As a self taught ceramicist, Joe loves exploring new ways to turn a lump of clay into something you can connect with.

Joe’s passion for ceramics is inspired by the fluidity and versatility of the medium. The dream is to be able to marry design with function and to push the boundaries of what their hands can create. Combining different techniques such as carving and sculpting with wheel throwing ensures that each piece is unique. They work with the guiding principles of accessibility and sustainability. Joe strongly believes in the power of art to bring communities together and is open to collaborations and commissions.

史(pronounced shǐ) is the Chinese character for my last name and translates to mean history.

Your last name is something that has been passed down through the generations and something that you are born into. I find it poetic how it holds the history of all my ancestors and by inscribing it onto my work, each piece then becomes a part of my legacy.

As someone who pulls a lot of inspiration from the past, I love the meaning behind this character. I am constantly seeking to understand, asking “how” and “why”. Looking to the past, learning the way they did things and how I can adapt those ideas and techniques and translate into something new.

Now, going a bit abstract, this symbol can be seen as a stylised rendition of “Joe”. It’s very subjective and you might have to squint to get it.

What is this symbol I keep seeing?
